Our History

Finding Inspiration in Every Turn

The challenges we face today stem from rapidly changing trends in our fast-paced world. Our youth are grappling with academic pressures, peer influence, bullying, parental expectations, and economic hardships. These factors can lead to depression, school dropout, juvenile delinquency, health issues, and substance abuse. As adults, it is our duty to play a positive role in children's lives and to protect them.

In 1929, the Salvation Army established a community playground, which quickly became a hub for neighborhood youth.

By 1942, the community's growth and rising crime rates necessitated a larger program. Thus, the L.A. Red Shield Boys Club was organized in a modest wooden building at the rear of the playground. By 1947, the program had flourished and outgrown its small facility on Ninth Street.

Red Shield experienced tremendous growth and, in 1950, opened its first building on a pair of lots on 11th Street. With support from radio stations, newspapers, donors, and the community, Red Shield built a gymnasium, game room, weight room, cardio room, swimming pool, computer lab, library, dance studio, art room, and performing arts theater.

In 2008, thanks to talented and dedicated volunteers, L.A. Red Shield introduced its first music classes, focusing on guitar and voice. Over the years, the curriculum expanded to include piano, violin, and drums. Today, the sounds of trumpets, violins, guitars, vihuelas, guitarrones, and the voices of Mariachi Rayos del Sol fill our hallways with traditional and modern cultural melodies. With your support, we aim to continue improving our community, connecting people, and making a positive impact on the thousands who pass through our doors.
